Our Story
In 2012 my wife and I faced the dilemma of helping her mother return home safely after a hospital stay. We lived almost 1,500 miles away and we found, like so many other Americans, that the home care services available were very confusing, and often very expensive. We made a lot of mistakes- ending up with services from agencies with very low care quality standards and poor customer service levels.
We knew there had to be a better way.
So, we started a home care agency focused solely on providing top-shelf care quality and customer service. The agency is highly successful, but we soon discovered that not everyone wants or needs a caregiver in their home for hours each day….it can be expensive and even somewhat intrusive. So, we searched for a solution to bridge the gap.

PCA Frequently Asked Questions
What is a PCA?
PCA stands for Personal Care Assistant. Certified by the Virginia board of Nursing, PCAs are trained to provide personal and companion care to patients. PCA duties include assisting patients with personal hygiene, dressing, meal preparation, physical therapy exercises, and medication reminders. Individuals who earn a PCAs certificate are certified to provide care at facilities, such as long-term care facilities, and in the patient’s home through employment with home care agencies.
Why Train to be a PCA?
Now is an excellent time to consider a career swap into healthcare! With America’s largest generation entering retirement age, demand has never been higher for healthcare workers and it is one of the fastest-growing professions in the country. A PCA certification demonstrates that you have successfully learned and demonstrated that you have all the skills needed to immediately begin working at facilities and for home care agencies.
How Long does Eclipse Train their PCAs?
Eclipse’s PCA training course consists of eight (8) class sessions spread over four (4) weeks. This allows students to continue to work and still have a life outside of the classes! Four (4) of the classes are lectures that include in-class exercises designed to introduce you to the basics of caregiving. The other four (4) classes are conducted in the field- where you shadow actual caregivers that are providing care to real patients. This field practice allows you to sharpen your skills and gain confidence through hands-on experience!
How Much Does a PCA Certification from Eclipse Cost?
Eclipse’s PCA training course costs $500. However, the course is provided at no cost to students who agree to work for Eclipse’s sister agency, BrightStar Care of Fairfax, while taking the classes or immediately after the classes are completed. A student who works for BrightStar at least 20 hours a week for 4 months will have the entire cost of the PCA course forgiven.
Who Teaches the PCA Classes?
Eclipse’s PCA training course is taught by experienced nurses and caregivers- all of who currently work as caregivers for BrightStar Care patients. The classroom portion of the course is taught in “Hazel’s Apartment”, a fully-furnished and state-of-the-art classroom setup up just like a patient’s home. Hazel (a medical mannequin) is the patient and “lives” in the apartment- which has a bedroom, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. During the field portion of the course, each student works alongside a nurse or caregiver at a BrightStar Care patient’s home.
Homecare Frequently Asked Questions
What is Homecare?
Homecare is exactly as it sounds! It is healthcare that is provided in the home. The goal of homecare visits is to ensure that the patient is living their best life! Homecare is provided by professionally-trained caregivers and nurses who can provide both skilled care and personal care. Personal care provides assistance with a patient’s Activities of Daily Life (ADLs). ADLs include bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, and home-making- including meal preparation, medication reminders; running errands and light housework such as vacuuming and laundry. Skilled care is provided by nurses- who are licensed to manage medications, administer wound care, take blood draws, deliver infusions and injections, manage ostomy care and provide tube feedings.
Who Provides the Care in Homecare?
Homecare services are provided by professional caregivers and/or licensed nurses. The care is guided by a plan of care that is developed by a nurse based on the nurse’s assessment of the patient. Caregivers provide personal care and companion care. Caregivers are trained and competencies by a nurse and may also earn certifications and state licenses such as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) license or a Personal Care Assistant certification. Only nurses, either Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Registered Nurses (RNs), are allowed to provide skilled care. RNs are the more senior nurses and they can oversee both LPNs and caregivers, as well as assess patients and craft the plans of care that guides care. In addition, skilled care can only be provided by a nurse when a licensed physician has written an order for the care and deemed the services necessary.
Who Pays for Homecare?
Homecare, like any medical care, can be expensive. The four main sources of payment are 1) Medicare, 2) Healthcare Insurance, 3) Long-term Care Insurance, and 4) directly by the patient (out-of-pocket private pay). Medicare only pays for a short period (generally 4-6 weeks) of nurse visits and therapy in the home IF the patient was admitted to the hospital for at least two overnight stays. Medicare generally does not pay for personal or companion care. Most healthcare insurance plans do not pay for homecare- although there is a trend for more companies to begin providing some limited homecare services. If a patient has long-term care insurance, it will generally pay for some homecare services but most people who need homecare must privately pay for service. When considering whether and how to utilize homecare, make sure to discuss all possible coverage options with a professional- an elder-law attorney or a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)) is an excellent resource to speak with!
