Home Care Advantages

Home Care Lowers the Cost of Health Care

In-patient Hospital Care is the most expensive element in our healthcare systems.  According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, an average hospital stay in 2021 cost over $13,000- averaging more than $3,100 per day.  In addition, the cost of a stay in the hospital is increasing faster (+7.1% per year) than other healthcare services (+4.6%) and the economy in general (+4.2%).   In-home care, on the other hand, costs far less.

According to Genworth studies, the average daily home care cost in the U.S. is only $150 per day- 50% less than Assisted Living, 75% less than a Nursing Home and a whopping 95% less than a day in the hospital.  It has also been shown that quality home care actually prevents future hospital stays- CMS studies have shown that hospital readmission rates have been reduced by up to 70% if home care is provided to at-risk patients.

This ability to avoid hospital stays coupled with the overall lower cost of home care means that your healthcare dollar will go further- and you will be healthier- when a home care program is added as an integral part of your healthcare strategy.

Research, including a report from the Annals of Internal Medicine and a ground-breaking study from Brigham Young University, has shown that recovery from injury and illness can be faster at home than in the hospital, particularly if there is good quality in-home care provided to the patient.  These studies show that the patient enjoys a much better quality of life, with many families reporting that home care helped to extend the lives, health & happiness of their loved ones.

These benefits are attributed, in part, to patients living in a familiar environment around their family in both their home and the community in which they’ve lived for many years.  This is particularly true for individuals suffering from other chronic conditions, including dementia.  Dr. David Levine, the head of the BYU study adds “We also know that patients move more during a home hospitalization, which we believe goes a long way toward healing,”

Home Care Enables Faster Recovery and Healing

Home Care Promotes a Better Quality of Life

Patients and their families enjoy a much better quality of life in several key ways when in-home care is provided:

Greater Independence

Older adults may not admit they’re struggling because they don’t want to lose their independence. A recent AARP study shows that 97% of seniors wish to remain in their home. One of the primary benefits of home health care is that it helps older adults continue doing everyday tasks like walking, bathing, dressing and preparing meals. This way, they can live independently at home as long as possible.

Safety, Comfort and Convenience

A recent study by UCLA researchers shows that elderly adults have fewer complications at home than in a hospital. A chief reason is that, with home health care, patients can get help managing their medications. This helps prevent missed doses and harmful drug interactions, which are a leading cause of admissions to the hospital. Home Health providers can also help create a safer environment to reduce the risk of falls- another leading cause of hospitalization. Finally, being at home allows older adults to maintain their routines in familiar surroundings and helps maintain a sense of calm and normalcy in their lives.

Relief for Family Caregivers

The benefits of home health care also extend to family caregivers. Home health aides can help with bathing, dressing and other daily tasks. This relieves some of the burden and stress on family caregivers- most of whom have the responsibilities of jobs and children in addition to helping care for their parents. The home health team can also educate family members about how to provide follow-up care and connect them with helpful resources. This type of support provides peace of mind and protects against family caregiver burnout.

Home Care Features

Accredited, Top-Quality Home Care Services

We have teamed with our sister agency, BrightStar Care of Fairfax, to deliver the highest quality home care in Northern Virginia. We provide person-centric personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming, etc.), companion care (meal preparation, errands, light housekeeping), and skilled nursing care (medication administration, wound care, and other complex care needs). We are one of the very few home care agencies in Northern Virginia accredited by The Joint Commission- the same organization that accredits the nation’s best hospitals- and we have achieved their Enterprise Champion of Quality designation for 9 consecutive years! This accreditation helps ensure that you and your loved ones are receiving home care that meets the strictest standards and is consistently rated the best.

RN Oversight and Supervision

One of our registered nurses oversees every client every day. Your RN will conduct an initial assessment to help identify your care needs and lifestyle issues. Having an RN assess your needs and health status helps ensure that we can provide precisely the required assistance- and in the manner that best suits your preferences and living arrangements. Your RN will regularly review the plan of care they developed for you based on the initial assessment and supervise the caregivers and other nurses who provide your care. In addition, you can consult with your RN at any time- they can answer healthcare questions that you might have and provide additional resources if your needs increase.

Guaranteed Compatibility

It is important that your care provider has the skills and experience to meet your care needs. But it is equally important that they are the kind of provider that fits into your lifestyle. Having a new person in your home can be difficult, but it is much more difficult if you do not enjoy their approach and personality. We go to great lengths to get to know you- your likes and dislikes, your daily schedule, your interests, and hobbies- all so we can match you with a care provider who will be a good fit. If for any reason, you feel the fit is not there we will replace the provider- no questions asked. This is our compatibility guarantee, and we take it very seriously.

Flexible Scheduling to Meet Your Needs

We know that your needs will change over time.  Therefore, we do not have long-term contracts or minimum care requirements.  You can schedule care for as little as 2 hours, once a week up to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  You can also change your schedule anytime you like- just give us 24 hours to make the adjustments and you can add, change or cancel care at any time.  Our Care Coordinators will schedule care based on your requests and needs and will adjust the dates and times each week as needed.  You will receive the coming week’s schedule each Saturday and one of our team is always available to discuss any adjustments.

Assistance Available 24/7

We provide care and assistance seven days a week and 24 hours a day, so we have to be available to you and your care provider during those times as well. We have a single phone number for our clients and they can reach us no matter the time of day or day of the week. We do not utilize a call service- we answer our phones with our own full-time staff. This means that the person you speak with will know your schedule and needs and can solve the issue right on the spot- no need for a callback! If you need the advice and counsel of a nurse, we have nurses on call as well- so you can get your clinical and health questions answered immediately.

Licensed, Accredited and Award-Winning Care

Reputable home care agencies are both licensed and accredited. Licensing by the Commonwealth of Virginia ensures that the agency complies with the regulations of the Virginia Department of Health and that caregivers and nurses provide services within their scope of practice. Obtaining accreditation- by The Joint Commission or other accreditor- is voluntary. Very few agencies seek this accreditation, it is expensive and difficult to meet the strict standards. Choosing a licensed and accredited agency assures you that the quality of care provided is among the highest in the country. Our agency is both licensed by Virginia and accredited by The Joint Commission- in fact, we have achieved the highest level of accreditation for 9 consecutive years.
